Meri Liberman

Meri Liberman is a Canadian actor who has roots in Israel, Belarus, and Ukraine. Meri is Fluent in three languages (English, Russian, and Hebrew). With a degree from Saint Mary’s University in Psychology and Linguistics, and a Cambridge CELTA certificate.

The art of acting has always been something Meri has been curious about. “It is something that  I became more interested in when I realized the sort of impact it has when you see someone like yourself with the same heritage and background on TV”, says Liberman. She has no preference between stage or film. She wouldn’t mind working in either.  Although she knows that each is vastly different.  But if she had to pick, she’d lean more towards film.

It was Meri seeing someone who comes from a similar background, from an immigrant family, trying to make it in the Western world and succeeding, that made her think that she could do it too. Mila Kunis was the inspiration for Liberman. Seeing that she moved to the US at a young age she didn’t know any English, similar to when Meri moved to Canada at 11 years old. Kunis has been vocal about being Jewish and proud and that is something that Meri admires, especially in this state of rising antisemitism. Liberman also looks up to how determined Kunis was when she auditioned and got her role on “That ’70s Show’ at the age of 14, applicants were told they had to be 18. “Kunis is a great example for actors to go for what they want and try their best regardless of the circumstances,” adds Liberman.

Liberman says what she enjoys most about acting is being part of something that will have an impact on at least one person. To have people relate and connect with the character that an actor is playing. Meri likes having the ability to put herself into someone else's shoes and feel the feelings of that person, that she is trying to portray. Meri thinks this is what makes an acting performance most believable.

Meri Liberman has not had as much acting experience as she would like, but that has not stopped her from working on her skills through auditions and self-tapes. She has been part of the iFilmGroup short film ‘Social Disobedience’ as the nurse Emily Anderson. She has also worked with iFilmGroup on their dramatic training segments for the training of actors. With her diverse background in language, she was a great choice for the dialect segment. She also has done some footage for the auditioning training segment.  She was in Legally Blonde in High School. Meri was also part of two plays in a summer camp, which was so long ago she doesn’t remember much.

When asked if she could trade places with a character in a film. Liberman's answer was…. “ If I could trade places with any character in a film I would choose Maddie Jonson played by Inbar Lavi in the film ‘Imposters’.”  Other roles Meri would love to switch with are Janet played by D'Arcy Carden and Eleanor played by Kristen Bell both in the show ‘The Good Place’. “ I see all of these characters as roles that would be extremely fun to play. All of them have huge character development and that is something that I love to see in films,” says Liberman.

The iFilmGroup team inquired about whether she had a dream role she would like to play.  Meri thinks that she would love to be part of a zombie show or movie!  She recently realized her love for apocalypse types of film and she thinks that it might be her favorite genre along with romantic comedy. “ I can see myself playing the lover or love interest, as well as the caregiver, best friend, imposter, femme fatale, observer, and storyteller. I want to play a variety of roles and hope to do so in the future,” says Liberman.

As a newer up-and-coming actor, we asked Meri what advice she would give to any new or aspiring actors who are coming up behind her.  “I feel the advice I would give to any new or aspiring actors is the same thing I tell myself, which is to figure out what you want, do your research, and then just go for it. Don’t let your fear of other people's opinions or judgment stop you from reaching your goals. Just try and do your best!”

As Meri Liberman moves forward in her acting journey she hopes to connect with people in the world through her work and show everyone that no matter your background or the hard experiences you’ve been through, that determination, hard work, and your belief in yourself and your abilities could take you really far.
