iFilmGroup Co-founder IS GUEST SPEAKER AT Scriptwriting Workshop for Teens
at Elgin Theatre Guild
Award-winning film director and iFilmGroup co-founder Matthew Marshall took time out of his busy production schedule for the dramatic film “Not Ready” to visit the Elgin Theatre Guild and be a guest speaker on scriptwriting for Lesley Chapman’ s workshop for the tweens and teens of the ETG.
Marshall and fellow iFilmGroup co-founder Don Hickey visited the ETG last summer and were guest speakers when Chapman ran a week-long workshop for 11 tweens dealing with the difference between film and theatre.
This summer Chapman ran a week-long workshop for the ETG Youth in early July dealing with Scriptwriting. The group came up with a theme of "Then There was Silence" and each of the three groups ( "The Purple Alligators", "The Unknown", and "The Bactors") had to come up with a concept, write a script and then rehearse it and perform it at the end of the week. Many of the youth from last year were back for this year’s workshop. There were also a number of faces from the ETG Youth who are part of the cast of the film “Not Ready” as theatre kids in the Theatre Guild that is part of the film.
Marshall, who is a playwright and scriptwriter himself, felt very honoured to be asked to come to speak. “I have a connection with a large portion of this group, through seeing them on stage at the ETG and even having had a number of them being apart of past films as well as being cast in the most recent film "Not Ready”, says Marshall. Some of Marshall’s numerous award-winning films include awards for his scriptwriting.
Marshall was blown away by the creativity of each group and what they came up with for scripts and some of the moving content and storylines they created. ‘They are a very talented bunch who think very deeply” adds Marshall. There was even talk at some point the ETG and the ETG Youth organizing a competition where the kids write short plays and they put them on for public view and have iFilmGroup be associated with the competition.
Marshall’s time with the ETG youth allowed mentoring by Marshall on scriptwriting and sharing his experience, but also gave him a chance to see the very talented work of up and coming local artists, many of whom are working with iFilmGroup already.
